What are spent grains?

What are spent grains? Spent grain is a term used in the brewing industry that describes the malted barley and other grains after a brewery has already used it to make beer. Malt is generally made from soaked, sprouted, and dried barley. Once the grain is deemed "spent," it means it can no longer be used to produce more beer.

Where do spent grains come from?

Spent grain is what is leftover after breweries have made beer. Did you know that every six-pack of beer uses approximately one pound of malted barley and other grains? From that one pound of dry malted barley and grain, it produces 1 1/4 pounds of wet spent grains. Every year in the US alone, 20 Billion pounds of brewers' spent grain is created.

Unfortunately, breweries discard most of the spent grain because they have no way to store or efficiently transport it. It is estimated that four million dump trucks of spent grain get wasted by breweries in the US annually.

How to transport and store spent grain?

Four ways to reuse spent grains

Repurposing spent grains has started picking up in popularity in recent years, and below is a list of the most popular uses for spent grains.

1 - Compost

The easiest way to reuse spent grain is to work it into your composting. Spent brewery grain is classified as nitrogenous waste, meaning it is high in green matter such as grass clippings and leaf matter or straw. Remember to use a 2:1 ratio of green matter to brown matter.

A simple way to use spent grains as compost is to put them directly in the ground. Mix the spent grains into the soil of your vegetable gardens and flower beds.

2 - Dog treats

Spent grains can be used as filler for homemade dog treats. HOPS ARE TOXIC TO DOGS , do not use spent grains that have come into contact with hops. Do not make treats from spent grains that were used to make wheat ale . Barley and oats are popular treats for dogs.

3 - Livestock feed

Spent grains are a good source of supplemental feed for animals such as horses, pigs, sheep, cows, and chickens. If the spent grain is wet, it must be used quickly because it will spoil quickly. If the grain is moldy or appears to have turned, do not feed it to your livestock. Put it into compost. Spent grains are not a replacement for traditional feed and should not be the bulk of the animal's feed.

4 - Baking

Did you know that you can use recently spent grains in cooking and baking? The grain can be used wet after most of the liquid has been pressed out of the grain. Wet spent grain can be used in small amounts to add texture and flavor to bread and various baked goods.

Dried spent grains can be dried and ground into flour. Drying spent grain can be done over the course of several hours by using a conventional oven. Spread the spent grain on a cookie sheet with a half-inch thickness. Set your oven's temperature to its lowest setting, around 170°F, and place the cookie sheet of spent grain in the oven. Keep the oven door cracked so that the moisture of the spent grain can escape. Check the progress of the grain every so often to stir the spent grain to check the moisture content and ensure that you are not burning the grain. The objective is to dry out the spent grain without actually cooking it or burning it.

Once the spent grain is dried, it can be milled into flour. This can be done in a grain mill, a standard food processor, or even a coffee grinder. The setting of your machine and duration depend on how fine you want your flour to be. Once you are happy with the consistency of the flour, you are ready to bake.

What is a Pallet Pack Container?

DuraGreen Pallet Packs are unique containers that can be used for many different applications. Each pallet pack container consists of three parts per unit: a plastic pallet, a plastic top, and a sleeve. The sleeve is available in either a corrugated cardboard option or a corrugated plastic option, and there are different footprints and heights available in each size.

The Corrugated Sleeve Option

With a heavy-duty, triple-wall corrugated sleeve , the corrugated cardboard sleeve can hold twice as much vertical weight as the corrugated plastic sleeve. When assembled, the cardboard pallet pack sleeve container option can hold 2,000 lbs. per container, and most sizes can stack four units high at full weight capacity. Even though it is made from a cardboard material, this sleeve is insanely strong! The only downside to this sleeve option is that it will act like cardboard when exposed to the elements. It is another option for you if you are in high humidity settings or if they are stored outside and exposed to the elements.

The Plastic Sleeve Option

The plastic sleeve option is made from a durable triple-layer polypropylene material. When fully assembled with the top and pallet, this container can hold up to 1,000 lbs. per unit, and most sizes can stack up to four units high. If you are storing your containers in high humidity or out in the elements, this is the better sleeve option when compared to the cardboard sleeve. Please keep in mind that there are still nooks and crannies from where the sleeve meets the top and the pallet, so if the elements are really acting up, this container will not be a waterproof option.

What about the pallets and tops?

The plastic tops and pallets are made from a twin-sheet, thermo-formed plastic. The pallets and tops have up to a 10-year life expectancy, whereas both sleeve options will get approximately 50-100 uses. The tops and pallets are nestable with each other, and the sleeves are collapsible, which makes for a great return ratio. Since these containers are lightweight, just one person can assemble and disassemble a unit.

What are Pallet Packs most common applications?

Some popular applications for cardboard and plastic corrugated sleeves are soft goods and textiles . These containers are not appropriate for flowable materials, such as resins. Regardless of what is stored in the containers, you must have all three components (top, pallet, and sleeve) when using the container. It is also very important that the load is centered on the pallet and not leaning against the sleeve walls of the container, or else the container could fail when not used properly.

What are the Pallet Pack footprint options?

Our stock footprint sizes are 40” x 48” and 45” x 48” with varying heights in both the corrugated cardboard sleeve option and the plastic corrugated sleeve option. Some sizes will have an option for a drop door for easier access into the container. Both materials have advantages and disadvantages, and below I have listed a couple of benefits of plastic over wooden pallets. This list will help you to understand the differences and make an informed decision when purchasing pallets for your business.

Benefits of Plastic Pallets versus Wood Pallets

Durable and long-lasting. Plastic pallets stand up well to the bumps and scrapes of repeated use in transit. They’re an excellent, cost-saving choice for close-looped systems, where you can use them repeatedly. While wood pallets typically provide less than a dozen uses, plastic pallets can be reused more than 200 times.

Earth friendly. When you replace wood pallets with plastic pallets, you save trees. And because they last longer than wood pallets, plastic pallets require fewer resources. There are many different footprint options for collapsible bulk containers . From 30" x 32" up to 90" x 48" . The most common, though, is the 40" x 48" and 45" x 48" bases. Sometimes it can be hard to know which is best for you, especially when you have a product that can fit nicely into either footprint. For collapsible bulk containers, 45" x 48" is the industry standard in America, but that doesn’t mean it is right for your application. There are a few benefits to a 40" x 48" bulk container over a 45" x 48".

The standard wooden pallet is 40" x 48". If you are switching from wooden pallets to bulk containers but have built your process for this pallet size, it may be difficult to transition your plant for a larger footprint. However, it is only five extra inches that adds up. Before you know it, your stacks extend two to three extra feet into your walkways. Also, reprogramming your machinery takes a lot of time and money if you have an automated setup. A 40" x 48" footprint collapsible bulk container can be transitioned in without as much adjustment.

Save shipping space, save money

40" x 48" bulk containers are actually superior for shipping on a 53’ tractor trailer. Though each one holds less product individually, their footprint is more compatible with a standard truck, cubing out the truck efficiently and cutting down on wasted cargo space. Compared to a standard 45" x 48" x 34" bulk container, the 40" x 48" counterpart can move almost 100 more cubic feet of space on a filled-out truck. That means you can move more of your product at a time, and less is spent on shipping air. Efficiently cubing out the 53’ trailer will lower your shipping costs, translating into more money in your pocket.

While the 45" x 48" is the standard footprint for collapsible bulk containers in the United States, this is not the case in Europe. In Europe, their standard bulk bin is 1,000 x 1,200. When you convert this from metric to standard, it comes close to 40" x 48". In fact, a few containers that we call 40" x 48" are actually 1,000 x 1,200. This means that if you have a lot of international business, it may be easier for you and your customers/vendors to go with a 40" x 48" bulk container .

In conclusion, though the standard size for bulk containers in America is 45" x 48", there are many different reasons that you may benefit from a 40" x 48" bulk bin instead. If you have built your plant around wooden pallets but want to transition over to collapsible plastic storage, this footprint would make the transition much easier. For shipping in trucks across the country where you need to move as much of your merchandise for as little as possible, these containers fill out a truck much better than their 45" x 48" counterparts. Also, if you deal with many international customers, this size is almost the exact size of the standard for European companies.

Our wine containers have a smooth, solid interior designed to eliminate any juice or grape leaks. Since polypropylene plastic is non-porous, there is no need to worry about the bins absorbing liquids. While these plastic bins are a great option for most customers, certain applications and materials can require a stouter, non-collapsible bin. This is where our line of fixed wall bulk containers come in handy.

Simple, sturdy design for demanding industrial applications.

The heavy-duty fixed wall bulk containers we sell are a single piece of structural foam injection molded plastic. Since these bins do not have any moving parts, hinges, or latches, these containers are extremely robust and suitable for use in various material handling applications. These bins are widely used for industrial distribution and in the automotive industry to ship high-weight, low-volume parts such as engine blocks, brake rotors, and transmissions.

These bins also work very well for items that put a lot of lateral pressure onto the walls. These types of materials are referred to in the industry as “fluid loads” even though they are not liquid. This means that whatever material is inside the bin does not hold its own shape without a container. Think of something like ball bearings, shell casings, pipe fittings, or chains and or chain links. When the items are in the container, they may be neatly organized, but if you were to remove a wall, the items would spill out of the bin rather than remain stacked up.

Containing and shipping “fluid loads” is a tough ask for collapsible bins as the outward pressure on the wall can lead to bowing, especially along the door hinges and the corners of the bins. While some bowing may still occur with a fixed wall container, it is much less pronounced and safer for long-term storage and transportation.

The perfect size for your specific needs.

For small, extremely dense parts like engine components, the 32” x 30” x 18” fixed wall bin is the way to go. For larger parts, we have quite a few offerings in the “open grid” 45x48 footprint . For customers who need a 45” x 48” fixed wall container with a solid floor, we have a customizable option that is blue in color. Our blue fixed wall container comes standard in a 19” height. We can customize this height to make it shorter and cut it down to whatever your particular use requires. There are horizontal ribs that fall at 12”, 15” and 16” but cuts can be made at any height without sacrificing stackability or strength.

Did you know that the same container used to haul your heavy-duty product, can be used as an aquaponic system? Over the years, customers have gotten really creative in how they can use our containers and one of the most interesting thus far is an aquaponics system. We have a variety of containers that would be suitable for this application. It all starts with a solid wall bulk bin .

Let’s start from the beginning! The University of the Virgin Islands Agricultural Experiment Station defines aquaponics as “the combined culture of fish and plants in recirculating systems. Nutrients, which are excreted directly by the fish or generated by the microbial breakdown of organic wastes, are absorbed by plants cultured hydroponically (without soil). Fish feed provides most of the nutrients required for plant growth. As the aquaculture effluent flows through the hydroponic component of the recirculating system, fish waste metabolites are removed by nitrification and direct uptake by the plants, thereby treating the water, which flows back to the fish-rearing component for reuse.” (James E. In short, aquaponics is a soil-less food production system that combines aquaculture and hydroponics to raise plants and fish in a closed system. Aquaponics has been gaining popularity over the years due to its extremely sustainable practice. From large farms to backyard home growers, our solid wall bulk containers can fit in just about any environment to achieve an aquaponic system.

Now don’t get me wrong, I am nowhere close to an aquaponics expert, but I can help you with the start- a closed system! We carry 5 different sizes of solid wall bulk bins that could work for this application. The first and smallest, being a 42x29x28” . These are FDA Approved and made from a non-porous material that is easy to clean and won’t breed bacteria or attract chemicals. The next size we could provide is a 44x48x29” , this is a little bigger than the one I just mentioned but it is made from the same material and has the same design. Two other options, identical in material and design with slightly different sizes are the 45x48x30” and 45x48x34” solid wall bulk bin . These can both hold up to 1,300 lbs. of weight and are also made of FDA Approved plastic to create an easy sanitization experience as well as food safe contact. The last size we can offer is the largest of the five, a 48x48x53” container . This is made from the same plastic as the two options mentioned before but can hold up to 3,0000 lbs.

What is spent grain and how can returnables help?

What is spent grain? It's a term used in the brewing industry that describes the malted barley and other grains after a brewery has already used it to make beer. Malt is typically made from soaked, sprouted, and dried barley. Once the grain is deemed "spent," it can no longer be used to produce more beer.

Spent grain comes from beer?

Did you know that every six-pack of beer uses approximately 1 pound of malted barley and other grains? And that pound of dry malted barley and grain, it produces 1 1/4 pounds of wet spent grains. Every year in the U.S. alone, 20 billion pounds of brewers' spent grain are created.

Unfortunately, breweries discard most of this spent grain because they have no way to store or efficiently transport it. It's estimated that four million dump trucks worth of spent grain are wasted by breweries in the U.S. annually.

How to store and transport spent grain?

Luckily, we have the ideal solution to help combat this waste. Once the grain is spent, it can be stored in one of our DuraGreen FDA-approved bulk bin instead of being discarded. Spent grains typically contain a large number of proteins, sugars, and minerals that can cause microbial growth if the gain is not refrigerated, frozen, or quickly dried. Additionally, if the spent grain stays at room temperature too long, it can turn sour. Our bins can be moved directly into large, refrigerated storing areas, ensuring the grains so not spoil.

What to do with spent grain?

Repurposing spent grains has started gaining in popularity in recent years. Below is a list of its most popular uses for spent grains.

Dog treats

Spent grains can be used as filler for homemade dog treats. HOPS ARE TOXIC TO DOGS , it's important to not use spent grains that have come into contact with hops. Don't make treats from spent grains that are used to make wheat ale. Barley and oats are also popular treats for dogs.

Livestock feed

Spent grains are a good source of supplemental feed for animals such as horses, pigs, sheep, cows, and chickens. If the grain is moldy or appears to have turned, do not feed it to your livestock. Instead put it into compost. It's important to note that spent grains are not a replacement for traditional feed and should not be the majority of an animal's feed.

Compost

The easiest way to reuse spent grain is to work it into your composting. Spent brewery grain is classified as nitrogenous waste , meaning it is high in green matter such as grass clippings and leaf matter or straw. Remember to use a 2:1 ratio of green to brown matter.

A simple way to use spent grains as compost is to put them directly into the ground. You can do this by mixing the spent grains into the soil of your vegetable gardens and flower beds.

Baking

Did you know that you can use recently spent grains in cooking and baking? The grain can be used wet after most of the liquid has been pressed out of it. Wet spent grain can be used in small amounts to add texture and flavor to bread and various baked goods.

Spent grains can also be dried and ground into flour. Drying spent grain can be done over the course of several hours by using a conventional oven. Spread the spent grain on a cookie sheet with a half-inch thickness. Set your oven's temperature to its lowest setting (around 170°F) and place the cookie sheet of spent grain in the oven. Keep the oven slightly ajar so that the moisture of the spent grain can escape. Check the progress of the grain every so often to stir it and check its moisture content. This can ensure that you're not burning the grain. The objective is to dry out the spent grain without actually cooking it or burning it.

Once the spent grain is dried, it can be milled into flour. This can be done in a grain mill, a standard food processor, or even a coffee grinder. The setting of your machine and grinding duration will determine the fineness of your flour. Finally, once you're happy with the consistency of the flour, you're ready to bake.

Step-By-Step - CenterFlow Seed Boxes Nesting and Assembly

The CenterFlow Hopper Bottom container is a staple of the seed industry. Its smooth, funnel-shaped interior is ideal for seed and grain and pellets, resins, and powders. Constructed of high-density polyethylene plastic means that it will not rust, peel, or splinter while handling thousands of pounds per load. The 35-degree angle of the chute ensures a steady flow of product, and an adjustable slide allows the container to be emptied in as little as 30 seconds. What many people don’t know, though, is that they can also be collapsed.

For the purposes of shipping or storage during the off-season, the CenterFlow Hopper Bottom can reduce its height to save up to 40% space. This helps to reduce the cost for them to arrive to you and increases the return ratio if you ship them in a closed-loop system. It accomplishes this feat in a way very different from standard collapsible bulk containers. The top half of the container is pulled away from the bottom, flipped upside down, and reattached over the bottom section, reducing the overall height while still allowing it to be moved with a forklift.

This means that when they arrive to you, that while they’ll be able to be moved with a forklift and unloaded from the truck, they will have to be assembled to use. Luckily, it isn’t too complicated, but you will need another person to help you get it into the correct position. When you remove the lid, you should see four crossbars running across the top of the opening, and the eight latches will be right below the top ledge. Straight down from the latches, you will find secure handholds at the top of the fork pockets. Utilizing these, you can lift the ring up and off the bottom section, separating the two pieces. With specialized forklift attachments, the process of assembling and nesting CenterFlow Hopper Bottoms can be safely and easily automated.

With the two parts disconnected, you have to rotate the ring around. There is another set of handholds at the top of this section, near the latches. These will help with the transition of the top half. Taking your time and being careful, pivot the piece, so the crossbars are on the bottom. Set the section, making sure to keep the long side with the long and short side with the short on the lower half. An indentation along what is now the bottom will sit over the base holding it in place.

The last thing to do is lock the eight latches, which will secure the top to the base. The lid can be placed back on top if needed. It is now operational and ready to be loaded. This same technique will work for the 65” and 74” versions.
